Re:            Aluminum surface finish color standardization

Jonathan Engineered Solutions will be standardizing our anodizing specification to comply with MIL-A-8625 Type II, Class 1.

The new JES specification is listed below:

Type II - Sulfuric acid anodizing, Class 1 -Non-dyed, Clear sealant

This new specification will satisfy the requirement “anodized in accordance with MIL-A-8625 TYPE II, CLASS 1, NON-DYED” called out on the controlling document and/or purchase order.

The quality level of the anodized finish will be maintained for all of our products.  However, this new specification may result in a cosmetic color change for some of your part numbers.  The new specification produces a part that has a natural aluminum finish (see figure 1).

Prior to this standardization, if the sealant required for the order was not specified on the controlling document and/or the purchase order, the JES specification would be used.  The JES specification did not specify the sealant to be used during the anodizing process and as a result the supplier would use their standard sealant.   This process was acceptable, due to the fact that the sealant was not specified by either the customer or in the MIL-A-8625 Type II, Class 1 specification.

Two types of sealants are used in the industry, a clear finish and a di-chromate finish.  The clear finish will produce a part with the natural aluminum finish.  The di-chromate part will produce a part that has a greenish hue (see figure B).

While both of these sealants satisfy the controlling document and or purchase order, we recognize that receiving parts with different colors would cause confusion for your receiving and inspection departments.

IMPORTANT:  Beginning May 1, 2008 the new JES specification, Type II – Sulfuric Acid Anodizing Class 1- Non-Dyed, Clear Sealant(Figure A) will be used for all orders that do not have a sealant specified.

Figure 1, New JES Specification:  Type II- Sulfuric Acid Anodizing Class 1-Non-Dyed, Clear Sealant will be used starting from May 1, 2008 for all orders that do not have a sealant specified.

Please notify JES at (714) 665-4400 if you are concerned, have any questions, or would like to include the sealant specification in your future orders.
